What do we do?

We are not only interested in the preservation and conservation of old buildings but are equally concerned about the quality of new buildings and developments – the heritage of the future. The planning applications submitted to Perth and Kinross Council are examined each week and commented upon as necessary and appropriate. We are also, increasingly, concerned about the natural environment and are vigilant in commenting on proposed developments that will have an impact on “Areas of Great Landscape Value” as there is a presumption against building in these areas.

Two Councillors, representing Perth and Kinross Council, attend our Executive Committee Meetings and this is a useful way of exchanging ideas and information.

Members' involvement

We organise outings to places of interest – often to places not usually open to the public. We have series of guided walks, usually in the late winter/early spring around different areas of the town and we provide leaflets detailing some of the points of interest on these walks. For many years we have organised guided walks during Perth Festival of the Arts. We periodically have walks in the countryside under the guidance of a Ranger.

We organise meetings for our members, particularly when there is a topical issue of great concern such as the proposals for the City Hall redevelopment. Officials and representatives of Perth and Kinross Council have always been most co-operative over these sorts of issues. We organise seminars open not only to our members but also to the wider public.

We issue a Newsletter at least twice a year.

Biennial Award

We run a Biennial Award Competition – held up by the Scottish Civic Trust as an excellent example of an award scheme. The competition alternates between restoration/renovation and new build and includes designed landscaping. Recent winners have been Gillies Furniture Store, Toll House Gardens, Greyfriars Burial Ground and the Nelson Street Housing Development.
